Am I ready for coaching?

Coaching is a rewarding, but challenging process. The coach is merely the facilitator – it is the client who has to work hard to change their situation.

Ask yourself the following questions to see how ready you are to commence life coaching at this moment in time.

• Can I be relied upon to attend all my appointments, and be on time for my coach?

• Am I willing to keep a coaching logbook which records my progress and helps my coach to understand my situation?

• Am I committed enough to practice the techniques that my coach shows me?

• Am I willing to change any long held beliefs or behaviours which are holding me back?

• Am I willing to question my thinking and be totally honest with myself and my coach?

You should also ask yourself how much you really want to change your situation.

A useful approach is to plot your self on a scale of 1-10 according to your desire to change.

Use the ‘key’ below.

ONE / TWO - I don’t really want to change if I’m honest.
TWO / THREE - I don’t really think change would resolve my problems.
THREE / FOUR – My friends / family / partner want me to change, but I’m not that bothered.
FOUR / FIVE – I can’t see me putting in the effort necessary to change.
FIVE / SIX – I’m not sure I could change, but I’m willing to try
SEVEN / EIGHT – I know my life would be better if I could change, but I’d need help to do it.
EIGHT / NINE – I’m willing to try something new – what I’m doing now is not working!
NINE / TEN – I’ve had enough of my situation and I really want to change. I’ll try anything that helps me.

To commence coaching, you should be at least a 5 or 6 on the scale. Any less, and you may not be ready for coaching at this point in time.
