A Source of Relaxation

Candle_smallThe flickering light cast by a candle can be an excellent source of relaxation. It is therefore a very useful image to focus upon when entering into hypnosis. The rhythmic dance of the flame, the subtle variations of colour, the smooth flow of the wax can all help infuse the mind with a feeling of well-being and calm.

Not only is the flame a source of calming light, it also creates an atmosphere of quiet and security. The thoughts can become subdued to its rhythm, the gentle flap of the flame reminding us also of the snap of canvas when a sail catches the wind. So the mind can be allowed to drift pleasurably into a deeper feeling of relaxation.

How does Hypnotherapy work?

Hypnotherapy is mainly concerned with the unconscious mind. We have explained a little about how the mind works, and the role of the unconscious in our ‘What is Hypnotherapy?’ article.

In that article, we likened the mind to an iceberg, with the tip representing the conscious mind.

The conscious mind is responsible for all our rational thought processes. We use this part of our brain when we need to focus or consciously think about something. For example, when we are doing something for the very first time or learning a completely new skill.

The unconscious mind, (or the hidden part of the iceberg), also plays a huge role in our everyday lives. The importance of the unconscious is often underestimated because this part of the brain operates on “auto-pilot”. Many people are unaware of its tremendous influence on our lives.

In the course of a day, we do many things on an unconscious level – the kind of things which we don’t even have to think about.

We carry out many tasks automatically because we have done them many times before.

This is where the unconscious mind steps in. It is responsible for many of our ‘taken for granted’ functions, including our;

• breathing and automatic nervous system
• emotions
• memories
• dreams
• imagination.

The unconscious mind is important to the hypnotherapist because it influences and controls many of our inner beliefs and behaviours. Some of these beliefs and behaviours are ones which we would want to change. Perhaps we have developed unwelcome habits or patterns of thought. Perhaps they have been learned in childhood for example, and are no longer appropriate to our adult lives.

These things cannot simply be changed by will power, reason or rational thought. The hypnotherapist therefore seeks to go directly to the unconscious mind in order to make changes.

It is easier to do this during hypnosis because the conscious mind relaxes, making the unconscious more open and accessible.

It’s almost as if the conscious, thinking part of our brain ‘goes on holiday’ and the unconscious comes to the fore.

Can I Be Hypnotised?

It is sometimes assumed that only gullible or weak willed people can be hypnotised.

This couldn’t be further from the truth. It takes an imaginative, creative and intelligent mind to experience hypnosis.

The people who find it most difficult to enter hypnosis are those with very limited intelligence, or who are under the influence of alcohol.

There are also a few people who have a great fear of ‘losing control’ and this may mean that they have to try a little harder to relax. In fact, there is absolutely no question of losing control during hypnosis, as our Common Fears article explains.

There have been a number of research studies that have explored this issue in some depth. They all seem to agree on the following:

• About 10% of people find it very easy to be hypnotised
• About 10% of people find it more difficult to be hypnotised
• About 80% of people are somewhere in between and make reasonably good subjects.

It is true that some people experience a deeper sense of relaxation than others – but clinical tests have shown that even a light state of relaxation can have tremendous benefits.

We will discuss any concerns that you may have in detail at the initial consultation, and will also explore the best ways to help you to relax and get the most out of your treatment.

Am I ready for coaching?

Coaching is a rewarding, but challenging process. The coach is merely the facilitator – it is the client who has to work hard to change their situation.

Ask yourself the following questions to see how ready you are to commence life coaching at this moment in time.

• Can I be relied upon to attend all my appointments, and be on time for my coach?

• Am I willing to keep a coaching logbook which records my progress and helps my coach to understand my situation?

• Am I committed enough to practice the techniques that my coach shows me?

• Am I willing to change any long held beliefs or behaviours which are holding me back?

• Am I willing to question my thinking and be totally honest with myself and my coach?

You should also ask yourself how much you really want to change your situation.

A useful approach is to plot your self on a scale of 1-10 according to your desire to change.

Use the ‘key’ below.

ONE / TWO - I don’t really want to change if I’m honest.
TWO / THREE - I don’t really think change would resolve my problems.
THREE / FOUR – My friends / family / partner want me to change, but I’m not that bothered.
FOUR / FIVE – I can’t see me putting in the effort necessary to change.
FIVE / SIX – I’m not sure I could change, but I’m willing to try
SEVEN / EIGHT – I know my life would be better if I could change, but I’d need help to do it.
EIGHT / NINE – I’m willing to try something new – what I’m doing now is not working!
NINE / TEN – I’ve had enough of my situation and I really want to change. I’ll try anything that helps me.

To commence coaching, you should be at least a 5 or 6 on the scale. Any less, and you may not be ready for coaching at this point in time.

Post a comment or email Aspire if you'd like to discuss.

A season as vibrant as any other in the Ribble Valley, the variations of tone burning away any possibility of gloom.

Further Sessions

Following the initial consultation further appointments will be made. The number of sessions will depend upon the nature of the treatment, but will usually be between two and six. More sessions may be needed in some cases.

Each appointment will be an hour long. Sessions will be based upon the initial consultation we have carried out with you and the treatment strategy that we believe is best suited to your problem.

In the course of therapy new issues sometimes emerge, so the treatment will be kept flexible and adaptable enough to respond to your individual needs as they arise.

Individual and Groupwork

Aspire works with both individuals and groups.

Work With Individuals

The majority of the work we do involves working with people one to one. We specialise in providing Hypnotherapy and Life Coaching. We also offer individuals the opportunity to do Personality Profiling and to learn NLP techniques.

See The Initial Consultation and Further Sessions for more detailed information on the way we work with individuals.

Groupwork

This is mainly done in small, one day workshops, consisting of 10 - 12 people.

The workshops focus on particular topics, such as Weight loss, Reducing Stress or Increasing Confidence.

We take an informal and non-threatening approach with our groups - believing that people learn best when they at ease, relaxed and having fun.

All participants who attend workshops receive an information pack on the topics we've covered, plus a voucher that entitles them to a Deep Relaxation Session with Aspire Therapy.

Workshops are held in comfortable, easy to access venues across the Ribble Valley and lunch is provided.

These scientific findings are helping to establish Hypnotherapy as a highly effective treatment in the eyes of the medical profession, and general public alike.
